The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This large canvas has been supported on the reverse by a glue lining. The paint layer is stable and exhibits a craquelure which follows the weft and weave of the canvas. Frame abrasions at the extreme edges have been retouched. A campaign of restoration in the sky and the darkest area of shadow is visible under raking light. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals multiple campaigns of restoration addressing the landscape, the figures in the foreground, the statue on the fountain, and the large central peacock. Restorations are also visible in the still life at left. The painting’s appearance could be improved slightly by cleaning and readdressing the discolored restorations in the sky to taste. The painting is offered in a painted and gilt wood frame.
