Lot Essay

The story of Tristan and Isolde (or Iseult) is a chivalric romance of the 12th century which became popular - with variations - in both prose and poetry in various European countries. The courtly narrative was translated into different art forms including ivory reliefs such as an example formerly adorning a casket and now in the Louvre (acc. no. OA 10958).
