This relined canvas retains good tension on its stretcher and remains structurally stable. In raking light, restoration is visible particularly in the sleeve of the little girl, throughout the background, in her dress and in the girl’s hairline. Ultraviolet examination confirms the above and reveals two further restored damages, one in the girl’s shoulder and the other near her fingertips resting on the back of the chair. The artist’s beautiful painterly technique is immediately apparent, with the drawing, modelling and wealth of colour appearing largely intact.
