The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is executed on a uniformly thin sheet of copper. The copper panel is supported on the reverse by a wooden cradle. Nails adhering the panel to the cradle are visible at the extreme edges. There is some tenting of the copper panel, especially at upper left and at the center. There are some old frame abrasions and associated losses at the extreme edges.
The paint layer is stable under clear varnish. Restorations to losses in the paint layer scattered throughout the background have discolored slightly with age, and are visible in the catalogue image. Delicate retouches to the skin tones of Saint John the Baptist and in the torso of Christ are also visible in raking light. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed a few further retouches in the figure's clothing. The painting presents well and can be hung in its present state. The work is offered in an ornately carved and gilt wood frame.
