The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is executed on a vertical grained panel composed of one board measuring approximately 1/8 inch thick. The top of the panel has been shaped into a semi-circle. The paint surface is clean and stable under a clear varnish. There is a fine network of craquelure across the surface. In natural light small areas of retouching are visible to the Christ Child's proper left foot and to pinpoint areas of Joseph's red cloak. The delicate glazes of the Virgin's veil and the Christ Child's garment have faded with age. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the aforementioned retouches, as well as retouching to Joseph's hairline and a few pinpoint restorations in the Virgin's face and robe. This panel is in good condition and is offered in a frame with a red velvet slip.
