The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting has been executed on a single piece panel. There is evidence of historic woodworm to the reverse of the panel. There is no evidence of live woodworm. It is clear that two supporting batons running horizontally across the panel at the upper and lower edges have been removed at some point in the past. The panel remains stable. Examination in natural light shows some stabilisation to the craquelure of the paint surface. There has been some retouching in oils to the flesh tones and in the pale tones of the Madonna's scarf and cloth worn by the child. There appears to have been some further retouching to the landscape and architectural background. Examination under UV light confirms the aforementioned retouching. The paint remains stable. There is evidence of a partially removed historic varnish. The delicacy of colouring and the draughtsmanship of the composition remain fully apprecaible, with some of the under-drawing visible.
