The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is supported on the reverse with a wax lining. The paint is stable on the support and the varnish clear, if somewhat yellowed. A fine craquelure is visible in natural light. Ultraviolet light reveals at least two campaigns of restoration, the earlier of which appears to have largely addressed loss of definition to the sky and clouds. A more recent campaign of restoration addressed portions of the craquelure in the sky as well as reinforced details in the upper part of the building, the right portion of the lower sail in the large merchant vessel at left various details in the ships and figures and the shallow water in the lower left foreground. The painting would likely benefit with a sensitive conservation treatment that more accurately applied the areas of retouching and, if desired, removed the old wax lining in favor of a more suitable one.
