The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel is approximately 11⁄4 inch thick and appears to comprise 4 vertical boards. Vertical channels are cut into the reverse and have been filled with wax. 4 horizontal battens reinforce the reverse. The framing elements along the left, right and lower edges appear to be modern. Under natural light, the varnish is clear. The paint is stable on the support. A 1⁄4 inch loss is visible on the halo and two 1⁄4 inch losses are seen at upper right on the cloth of honor. A wide, horizontally oriental craquelure is visible in places. There is lifting and associated losses in the blue sky, which appears to have been repainted in large part, and scattered losses to the gold over a crack to the right of the saint’s face. A white material is affixed to the surface at lower left (visible in the catalogue illustration). 2 vertical cracks are visible 8 inches from the right edge and 6 inches from the left edge, respectively. Under ultraviolet light, retouching fluoresces on the saint’s right cheek and hands, as well as on a 1 inch line at the top of the cloth of honor. Additional touches are seen on the saint’s garments and the lower ledge, and a 1 inch area on his shoulder. The painting may be displayed as is, but the appearance could be improved with conservation.
