The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel is composed of three vertically oriented boards with vertical wood grain and measures approximately ¼ inch thick with a cradle on the reverse. The varnish is clear and the paint stable on the support. A fine craquelure is visible in natural light. Several hairline cracks are visible along the top and bottom edges, the most noteworthy of which are one measuring approximately five inches in length at upper center and another measuring approximately 10 inches in length at lower left. An area of restored loss measuring approximately 2 x ½ inch in length at the extreme lower right edge is visible in natural light. Ultraviolet light reveals several campaigns of restoration, largely to close the vertical wood grain, reinforce contours in the figure’s flesh tones and drapery and address losses along the panel joins. Earlier campaigns of restoration are also evident in the background, partially to heighten definition between the figure’s dark clothing and the background. The painting presents well and should be displayed in its current state.
