Lot Essay

This composition derives from a painting by Luca Carlevarijs, one of the vedutisti who most heavily influenced the work of Swedish born Richter. The best surviving example of the former's composition is in a private collection in Milan (see A. Rizzi, Luca Carlevarijs, Venice, 1967, p. 61, pl. 161), with a further example to be found in the National Gallery of Slovenia.
