ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN FERNELEY SN. (THRUSSINGTON 1782-1860 MELTON MOWBRAY)
Portrait of Anthony Adrian Keith-Falconer, 7th Earl of Kintore (1794-1844), seated in an interior
Anthony Adrian, 7th Earl of Kintore, was an important patron of Ferneley. First mention is made of him in a letter dated 28 August 1824 from the artist to his wife, when he records going to see Lord Kintore at Keith Hall for a day's shooting with Sir Harry Goodricke. He was obviously asked to stay for a while as further letters to his wife were written from Keith Hall, in which he records receiving commissions from the Earl's friends, but being unsure of when they would be carried out as 'it will depend upon the time I have with Lord Kintore's pictures'. Correspondence continued between the two for some years afterwards. The present portrait is more intimate than the majority of works executed by Ferneley for the Earl, showing him in his home rather than out hunting. It is amusing to note that hanging on the wall to the left is the Keith Hall Ox, lot 205 in the present sale.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been subject to relining, it is held under tension and remains stable. The painting presents very well in natural light, with the crispness of execution and the detail of the interior well preserved. There is some minor retouching in the sitter's costume that has marginally discoloured. The varnish at upper right has degraded somewhat, this would benefit from a light clean and revarnish. There is some slight surface dirt. Examination under UV light reveals some minor scattered retouching. The thick varnish precludes a more in depth examination. The painting is in good condition overall.
