The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is supported on the reverse with a glue lining. The varnish is glossy, although somewhat yellowed in places. The paint layer is stable on the support. Under natural light, a wide craquelure is visible throughout the painting. Some scuffing due to frame contact is visible along part of the extreme edges. Stokes of discolored inpainting can be seen in the background and in the Madonna’s blue cape. Under ultraviolet light, inpainting fluoresces in the Madonna and Child, and in the background. The inpainting is most prominent in the Madonna’s proper right cheek and neck, and across her proper left hand. The inpainting fluoresces both a dark and a light purple, indicating at least two campaigns of restoration. The picture could be displayed in its current state.
