The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel measures approximately 1/8 inch thick and has been laid down to a secondary panel measuring approximately 1 inch thick. The paint is stable on the support and the varnish cloudy and yellowed. A fine horizontal craquelure is visible in natural light, particularly in the shadows. Scattered scuffing due to frame abrasion is visible along the edges. The panel is composed of two vertically oriented boards, the join of which runs through the right shoulder of the standing man. Four vertical cracks, the largest of which measures approximately 5 inches are visible extending from the top edge. A fifth, very thin crack extends vertically from the bottom edge through approximately 4/5 the composition. There are a handful of small scuffs to the varnish layer around the table at lower right. Ultraviolet light does not easily penetrate the old varnish layer, though there do appear to be areas of strengthening along the upper portion of the panel join. The painting can be displayed in its current state but would likely benefit if the varnish were refreshed.
