The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The copper plate is in plane. The thick varnish is cloudy and yellowed and the paint stable on the support. A fine craquelure is visible in natural light. A handful of small losses are visible at lower left due to earlier frame abrasion, which has also caused light scuffing around the exterior of the oval. Ultraviolet light does not easily penetrate the old, discolored varnish but an area of restoration in the background is evident running from the central right edge up to the man’s proper left cheek. The restoration does not appear to affect the figure, which appears to be in a wonderful state of preservation with all the fine details reading clearly. While the painting can be displayed in its current state, its appearance would be dramatically enhanced by a sensitive conservation treatment.
