The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Both canvases have been strip lined and provide stable support for the pictures. There is an even gloss varnish and a pattern of craquelure to both pictures. They present very well overall, with original brushwork and areas of impasto well preserved. The examination under UV shows scattered retouching to both, with some more concentrated areas along the lower edge of the Augustus and a small restoration to the eye of Claudius (possibly to replace a very small tear/loss).
