The painting has recently been relined; there is good adhesion between the original canvas and the lining fabric.
The paint layer is stable and secure. Some of the more pronounced impasted passages have been slightly compromised.
The paint texture through the breast plate and drapery is well preserved.
A small paint loss to the buff coloured tunic beneath the breastplate has been repaired, along with the drapery to the lower right corner.
U-V light shows very careful recent reduction of minor pitted loss and thinness through the sky and clouds, upper right and through the column.
Strengthening of the low lights through the sitter’s hair has been undertaken to replace loss of modelling.
Decorative detail down the slashed sleeves, the paint through the breast plate and the buff coloured tunic are well preserved.
Minor blemishes and hairline craquelure to the face have been addressed; overall the skin tones and the modelling to the face and hands are well preserved.
Fine detail and modelling through the lace is retained.
Chromatic integrity and original tonal modulation are well maintained and the painting presents well.
