The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel is made up of a single soft-wood board, this has a convex bow, which has resulted in a slight vertical crack that runs down the centre of the composition. There is evidence of historic woodworm, this is no longer active. The edges of the panel to the verso suggest that an engaged frame was previously attached and has been removed. The reverse of the panel has been painted with a red ground. The panel remains stable.
Examination in natural light indicates that the gold ground is well preserved, with the clarity of the punch marks maintained. There is some suggestion of retouching in the figural group, to the flesh tones, and Madonna's robes. Examination under UV light confirms these observations; specifically, there is clear retouching to the edges of the Madonna's blue cloak and belt and the flower details in the cloak, as well as evidence of at least one earlier campaign of restoration to the figures. The delicacy of execution remains well preserved. The whole is stable.
