The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting presents well overall. The canvas has a glue relining and is flat; the tacking along the upper edge is coming loose from the stretcher. The paint surface is clean beneath a clear varnish. Some old retouching has discolored a little over time (for example in the sky and clouds lower right) which is visible in the catalogue image but is not distracting. There is some abrasion, most notable in the legs of the putto and sky surrounding him.
Inspection under UV reveals extenisive retouching throughout. There are numerous restored cracks, losses and possible holes, including a possible restored tear running horizontally from the left edge to the wrist of the sitter. There are restored losses to her face and to the face and chest of the putto. The retouching attending to these restorations has been sensitively applied and despite fills the surface remains smooth and even.
The painting requires no further intervention and is ready to hang in its present state. Offered in an elaborately carved giltwood frame.
