The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The uncradled panel is composed of a single board measuring approximately ¼ inch thick with vertically oriented wood grain and beveling along all four sides of the reverse. The varnish is cloudy and yellowed and has begun to go matte in places and the paint stable on the support. Scuffing and losses due to frame abrasion are visible along the edges of the panel, as are two scratches extending into the paint layer in the lower right quadrant. Ultraviolet light does not easily penetrate the aged varnish layer, though two short horizontal lines of restoration are visible in the man’s cloak at lower left, as does a vertical line extending 1/2 inch in the man's beard. The painting's appearance would likely be dramatically enhanced following a sensitive conservation treatment.
