The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This canvas is reinforced on the reverse with a glue lining. The varnish is minimally yellowed and there is a fine craquelure visible in natural light. Scattered areas of scuffing due to earlier frame abrasion are visible along the left and right center edge of the painting. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals passages of restoration to the background and the figure, but the medallion and artist’s tools appear to be well preserved. Notable areas of restoration include an approximately 1 inch long area on the right side of the sitter’s mustache, to the left side of the sitter's face close to his hair and a 4 x 3 inch section of restoration to the sitter’s coat above his right sleeve. The painting presents well and should be hung in its current state.
