Following his nine year sojourn in Paris and Italy, Cornelis de Man returned to Delft in 1654, where he quickly assumed the position as Director of the Guild of St. Luke (1657-1696). Church interiors by de Man are particularly rare, with only thirty known extant by the artist. Charming elements of narrative in the composition reflect the influence of Johannes Vermeer and Pieter de Hooch. The jubilant children in the foreground, figures engaged in conversation and the playful dogs invite onlookers into this lively scene. Post Lot Text This lot is offered without reserve which will be sold to the highest bidder regardless of the pre-sale estimate.

The canvas is supported with a glue lining and the paint is stable on the support. There is a 5 inch vertical scratch at the lower left edge, and a 1 inch horizontal scratch with two corresponding losses nearby. Another small loss is seen at the upper right corner. Under natural light, a craquelure is seen in places. Discolored, greyish-white retouches are seen here and there across the painting. These appear to have been clumsily applied, and the extent of the damage beneath them is unclear. Under ultraviolet light, passages fluoresce faintly on the curtain, on the clock, and in places over the figures in the foreground. It appears that the painting has not been conserved in many years, and a sensitive cleaning should improve its appearance.
