The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The panel, which is made up of three vertical planks, has very slightly warped. There are some minor surface scuffings and evidence of strengthening along the panel joins, notably in the background, but the painting presents well overall.
Examination under ultraviolet light is somewhat obscured by the uneven varnish layers but confirms the aforementioned strengthening associated to the joins and to some of the darker tones in the armour and background. There is also an area of retouching in the flesh tones underneath the sitter’s real right eye.
