The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel is uncradled and the paint stable on the support. The varnish is yellowed and has gone matte in places. There is a fine craquelure in natural light. Abrasion or an alteration of the pigments has caused the serpent to become fainter over time. The varnish fluoresces green under ultraviolet light and several passages of more recent restoration fluoresce, notably in the proper left side of Lucretia’s face as well as a line to address a scratch running from the top of her neck into her chest. A handful of additional strokes of retouching fluoresce in her breasts, torso and background. The painting would likely benefit from a sensitive conservation treatment.
