The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting is supported with a glue lining, with 2 inch additions to the left, upper and right edges (visible in the catalogue illustration). The varnish is clear and the paint is stable on the support. Losses are visible along the additions at right and left (see catalogue illustration). These are not visible when the painting is in its frame. The paint surface is rubbed in the blues, with corresponding salt and pepper losses. There is thinness in the background. Under natural light, a craquelure is visible in the face and hands, with discolored inpainting on the proper left side of his neck, above the collar. Under ultraviolet light, strengthening associated with a 7 inch horizontal line fluoresces, 4 inches from the upper edge. Additionally, a 6 inch horizontal line fluoresces 4 inches from the upper edge at right. Strengthening is also visible to the forehead, mustache, beard, garments, hands and keys, including an 8 inch horizontal line, 2 inches from the lower right edge and a 10 inch vertical line, 8 inches from the left edge. 2 approximately 1 x 2 inch areas also fluoresce over his proper right shoulder. The painting could be displayed as is.
