The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Painted on a characteristically open-weaved canvas, the work has been relined and retains a good tension on its stretcher. The corners have been made up. There a few surface scratches and some minor scuffing along the edges. The paint surface is stable, but it has been somewhat flattened by the relining treatment. The artist's painterly technique remains appreciable throughout and the picture presents well overall.
Examination under ultraviolet light is largely obscured by the old varnish layers but reveals one small area of retouching associated to a historic paint loss in the yellow mantle of the figure, upper left. The picture would otherwise appear to be in good original condition.
