The canvas is supported with a glue lining and is secured to a new, wooden stretcher. The varnish is cloudy and the paint is stable on the surface. A craquelure is visible over the child’s face. Under ultraviolet light, areas fluoresce at upper right, above his proper left shoulder and over the collar of his inner coat. The painting could be displayed as is, but conservation to conceal the craquelure over his face would improve the painting.
