A note on the provenance:
Antoinette d'Harcourt was a relation of the neoclassical painter François-Pascal-Simon Gérard, called Baron Gerard, on her father's side. She married François-Charles d'Harcourt, 11th duc d'Harcourt et de Beuvron in 1927, but went on to have a relationship with the popular actress known as Arletty. Part of the fashionable Parisian set which included Coco Chanel, Antoinette was a poetess, whose collection Neiges was set to music by composer Henri Sauguet. During the German Occupation of France, she was a member of the Resistance and was incarcerated for a year in the prison of Fresnes in the suburbs of Paris.
