The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting is unframed, as stated in the catalogue. The canvas is supported with a glue lining, and the paint is stable on the support. Under natural light, the varnish is clear and a fine craquelure is faintly visible in places. Slight scuffing to the varnish is visible at the lower edge. Ultraviolet light examination reveals a few scattered touches of strengthening in the sky, a few touches on the bridge of the gentleman’s nose, a few on the rear of the horse, at center in his lower leg, and on his waste. Overall, the painting appears to be in lovely condition and may be displayed as is.
