Lot Essay

This Saint George almost certainly belongs to a group of several other reliquary busts from the same commission – similar to the choir stalls of the Ulm Cathedral attributed to Syrlin the Elder -- and these were, probably by no coincidence, also in a North Carolina Collection. This group was possibly split up with the present bust ending up with Mr. Doll and the Saint Vitus, exhibited at the North Carolina Museum of Ar in 1967, being owned by Justus Bier and then later his son, Max Robert Bier (North Carolina Collects: A Loan Exhibition of North Carolina Owned Art Objects, North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, 1967, no. 32).
