The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This oak panel is even and remains stable. The reverse of the panel appears to have at one time had a cradle, which has since been removed. Two small horizontal cracks can be seen near the centre of the panel. There is some historic abrasion in the darker passages of the browns, which were seemingly painted in thinner glazes, revealing some of the panel ground and horizontal woodgrain. The impasto of the foliage remains highly appreciable. There is a minor paint loss in the upper right (visible in the illustration). Ultraviolet examination reveals an old degraded varnish that prevents further examination.
