Lot Essay

The work was traditionally given to Antonio Carneo, until Safarik in his 2003-2004 catalogue of his collection suggested reattributing the work to Langetti. That attribution has subsequently been endorsed by Anna Orlando, who in 2006 and 2007 published entries on the painting, and, most recently, Marina Stefani Mantovanelli (loc. cit.).
