The first:
The panel is uncradled and composed of a single board with vertical wood grain measuring approximately ½ inch thick and with beveling along all four sides of the reverse. The varnish is clear and glossy and the paint stable on the support. A light line of frame abrasion is visible along the upper left edge. Under ultraviolet light, the thick varnish fluoresces green, limiting further inspection of the work. A small loss to the lower upright part of the letter ‘f’ at lower right is visible in natural light. The painting appears to be in a fine state of preservation, with areas of impasto along the sitter’s white collar and in the flesh tones. The painting can be displayed in its current state but might benefit if the varnish were toned according to taste.

The second:
The panel is uncradled and composed of a single board with vertical wood grain measuring approximately 3/8 inch thick and with beveling along all four sides of the reverse. The varnish is clear and glossy and the paint stable on the support. Scattered unobtrusive areas of frame abrasion are visible along each of the edges. Some old surface grime is visible, presumably beneath the most recent varnish layer, particularly in the flesh tones and whites of the woman’s clothing. Under ultraviolet light, the thick varnish fluoresces green, limiting further inspection of the work. The painting appears to be in a fine state of preservation, with areas of impasto evident in the fine work of the woman’s straw hat. The painting can be displayed in its current state but might benefit if it were cleaned and the varnish refreshed according to taste.
