Lot Essay

This study can be compared with another study of a stag's head in the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire, Narbonne. Klaus Ertz (loc. cit.) dates both sketches to the period before Brueghel's trip to Italy around 1620 and suggests they were preparatory for the stag in the artist's Vision of St. Hubertus of 1621 (Alte Pinakothek, Munich).
