The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is reinforced on the reverse with a glue lining. A fine craquelure is visible in natural light, with some tenting visible along the craquelure in raking light. The varnish is cloudy and yellowed, particularly in the sky at upper right, and the paint stable on the support. Isolated lines of scuffing due to frame abrasion are visible along the edges of the canvas. Ultraviolet light reveals two campaigns of retouching to the sky and clouds, notably at upper left around the tree. Ultraviolet light does not easily penetrate the degraded yellowed varnish in the landscape, though aside from some light abrasion causing the canvas weave to become more pronounced in the most thinly painted areas, many of the fine details remain appreciable. The painting would likely respond well to a sensitive conservation treatment.
