The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is reinforced on the reverse with a glue lining. The varnish is generally clear, though some areas have gone slightly matte, and the paint stable on the support. There is a fine craquelure in natural light and a slight undulation to the canvas. Marks from the stretcher bar are visible along all four edges. Under ultraviolet light, the painting appears to be in a fine state of preservation, with restoration apparently limited to two small vertical tears measuring approximately ½ and 1 inch in the man’s upper legs and tapestry, respectively, as well as two pinhead sized dots in his cheek and one small passage measuring approximately ¼ inch in the shelving at left. The painting can be displayed in its current state.
