The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Saint Anthony:
The panel is approximately 1 inch thick and is a fragment from a larger altarpiece, which appears to have been dismantled in the 1950s. It is housed in a modern wood frame. Some of the edges are blackened, suggesting that it may have been in a fire at one point. The pastiglia and wood decorations are partially preserved, and the twisted column at left indicates where it would have joined its pendant. Much of the gilding and punchwork appears to be well-preserved, as is the saint’s face, hands and much of his garment. His bell may have been silvered. Discolored retouches are visible in places on his robe. The reverse of the panel exhibits inactive old woodworm damage. Under natural light, a craquelure is visible in places. Under ultraviolet light, strengthening is visible over his staff, but otherwise little inpainting is seen.
Saint John:
The panel is approximately 1 inch thick and is a fragment from a larger altarpiece, which appears to have been dismantled in the 1950s. It is housed in a modern wood frame. Some of the edges are blackened, suggesting that it may have been in a fire at one point. The pastiglia and wood decorations are partially preserved, though the left edge is missing its column and some of the wood in this area has split and been repaired with a modern strip of wood. Much of the gilding and punchwork appears to be well-preserved, as are most of the flesh tones. A craquelure is visible over his face and hands and there is a small indentation at the center of his forehead. A 2 inch retouch is seen on his left hand. The garments appear to have lost their glazes and the gilding on his robe may be repainted. The reverse of the panel exhibits inactive old woodworm damage. Ultraviolet light examination reveals two 2 inch passages of retouching at the center of his chest and on his proper left shoulder as well as a triangular shaped damage at lower center. A few other areas fluoresce.
In general, these paintings appear to be in remarkable state, considering their size and age. They could be hung as is.
