The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The varnish is cloudy and yellowed and the paint stable on the support. The panel has been cradled and four horizontal strips of wood have been added around the edges. A small 1/8 x ¼ inch loss is visible at the extreme upper left edge. Under ultraviolet light, the aged varnish fluoresces green but two campaigns of restoration are visible. The earlier intervention appears to be restricted to fine lines of retouching to close the vertical wood grain, predominantly at lower right in the figure’s neck and chest and at upper left. A second, more recent conservation treatment includes a handful of small touches of retouching to the woman’s veil and along a short vertical crack extending approximate 1 ½ inches from the lower left edge.
