THE MASTER OF THE LAZZARONI MADONNA (ACTIVE FLORENCE C. 1375)
A triptych of The Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels; The Angel of the Annunciation and The Adoration of the Magi on the left wing; The Virgin Annunciate and the Crucifixion on the right wing
Richard Offner first assembled the corpus of paintings by this fourteenth-century Florentine master under the placeholder name `The Master of the Two Madonnas', though he later revised the name, working with Klara Steinweg, to the current pseudonym based on the Madonna and Child with Two Angels formerly in the Lazzaroni collection, Paris (M. Boskovits, Pittura Fiorentina alla vigilia del Rinascimento 1370-1400, Florence, 1975, p. 239, note 169). This distinctive painter was active in the late trecento and is thought to have trained in the workshop of Jacopo di Cione, called Orcagna. He also appears to have drawn inspiration from the works of Andrea Bonaiuti and Cenni di Francesco. In 1393, he completed the allegorical figures for the fresco of the Virtues in the Palazzo Comunale di San Miniato together with the latter of these painters. The present triptych is characteristic of the Master of the Lazzaroni Madonna’s work, particularly in the idiosyncratic, stylized treatment of the drapery, which can be observed in the triptych of the Madonna and Child enthroned with Saints in the Cini collection, Venice. We are grateful to Laurence Kanter for endorsing the attribution on the basis of photographs.

The central panel is approximately 1 inch thick and is not reinforced on the reverse. The wings are approximately 1⁄2 inch thick, corresponding to the thickness of the central panel without the molding. Central panel: There is damage to the upper pinacle and losses to the gold here and there. The varnish is clear and the paint is stable on the support. Under natural light, a fine craquelure is visible on the faces. The blue of the Virgin's robe has lost some of its glazes and there appears to be some restoration to the face of the saint at upper left.Under Ultraviolet light, retouching is visible at the top of the panel, with a few touches on Christ's forehead, and some of the saint's faces. Left wing: There is a 41⁄4 inch strip of wood affixed to the top of the panel. Under natural light, a fine craquelure is visible to the faces and some of the garments. Discolored retouching is visible on Gabriel's robe. Under ultraviolet light, retouching on the standing Magus at left fluoresces as well as on the shoulder of the second standing Magus. The gold between Gabriel's wing and robe fluoresces, and his wings appear to have been reworked. Right wing: Under natural light, a fine craquelure is visible on Christ and other figure's faces. Mary's blue robe has lost some of its glazes. The Magdalene's robe has retouching here and there. There are losses to the gold here and there, and a12 inch strip of wood is affixed to the edge to assist with closing the triptych. Ultraviolet light reveals retouching to the background in places.
The painting presents well and may be displayed as is..
