Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The composition has been executed decisive handling, with greater delicacy in the smaller brushstrokes of the face. The overall freedom of execution remains fully appreciable. The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. There has been some thinning to the paint layers as a result of this process. Examination in natural light shows a repaired diagonal tear of approximately 30 cm. to the upper left corner. There is scattered retouching to the background, sitter's costume and flesh tones. Examination under UV light is partially impaired by a tick varnish. However, the aforementioned restorations and retouchings are discernable, as well as a later area of restoration to the left of the sitter's head. The paint remains stable.
