The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is reinforced on the reverse with a glue lining. The varnish is slightly cloudy and yellowed and the paint stable on the support. In natural light, several passages of old, discolored retouching are visible, including those that address two approximately 2 inch restored tears in the background at upper left and several small punctures or tears measuring approximately 2 inches in length in the woman’s red and brown drapery. Ultraviolet light reveals two small passages of retouching in the woman’s forehead of approximately 1 x ½ inch and smaller dots of retouching in her flesh. The painting would likely respond well to a sensitive conservation treatment that better integrated the now discolored areas of retouching.
