The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The linen is laid down on a wood panel, approximately 3⁄8 inch thick, which is reinforced with a horizontal wooden batten near the upper edge. A channel along the lower edge would have held a second batten, now lost. A wax seal appears on the reverse near the lower right corner. The linen is unvarnished and a crack or tear is visible running over Christ’s right arm toward the center of the painting. The linen has lifted slightly away from the panel in places along the center of the painting, to the left of Christ and the Magdalene. A 1⁄4 inch loss is visible on Christ’s left shoulder and the linen has lifted slightly over his face. A damage is visible on the Swooning Virgin’s robe near her feet. Several holes from woodworm activity are visible in the sky and in a few places near the bottom of the painting. In general the paint surface appears to be remarkably well preserved for such a delicate medium, though some damages are seen in the sky. Several of the figures fluoresce in places under ultraviolet light, but it is difficult to determine whether this indicates repainting The painting could be displayed as is, but conservation by an Old Master Paintings or Textiles conservator may be considered.
