Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has an old glue relining and is firm on its stretcher. The paint surface is stable and clean beneath a clear varnish with a craquelure pattern in keeping with its age. There is a minor retouched loss in the brown drapery of the standing figure lowered left and another minor filled retouched loss in the shubbery in the background upper right, both faintly visible to the nakey eye but not distracting.
Inspection under UV reveals very minor, finely applied retouching to the figures in the foreground, minor areas of retouching in the background shrubbery upper right and restoration on the upper left and upper edges. All of this has been sensitively applied.
The painting requires no further intervention and is ready to hang in its present state. Offered in an elaorately carved giltwood frame.
