The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The first:
The canvas is unlined. In visible light, the varnish is clear and a fine craquelure is visible on the surface. Under ultraviolet light, a few retouches fluoresce at upper center. The painting presents well and may be displayed as is.
The second:
The canvas is supported with a glue lining. In visible light, the varnish is clear. A wide, fine craquelure is visible on the paint surface. Discolored retouching to the craquelure is visible in the background. Under ultraviolet light, retouching is visible at lower center and over a thin line on the child’s face. The painting may certainly be displayed as is, but would respond well to conservation to address the background.
