The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The aged varnish is cloudy and has gone matte and the paint stable on the support. The panel is uncradled and exhibits beveling along all four sides of the reverse. Ultraviolet light reveals scattered fine dots of retouching to close the vertical grain of the panel in the sky as well as an approximately ½ inch line of retouching in the top of the horse’s haunch and several scattered dots in the foreground. In general, the painting appears to be in an excellent state of preservation. While the painting can be enjoyed in its current state, the sense of depth and detail would likely be enhanced if the painting were cleaned and the varnish refreshed.
