Lot Essay

This monumental corpus figure, a rare survival from the 13th century, relates closely to other early, carved monumental corpus figures ranging from those produced in Scandinavia, though the Low Countries and France, and down to Spain. Though the Spanish examples appear to closest to the present lot (see P. Thoby, Le Crucifix: des Origins aux Concile de Trente, 1959, nos. 250, 257, 258 and 259.
