This monumental corpus figure, a rare survival from the 13th century, relates closely to other early, carved monumental corpus figures ranging from those produced in Scandinavia, though the Low Countries and France, and down to Spain. Though the Spanish examples appear to closest to the present lot (see P. Thoby, Le Crucifix: des Origins aux Concile de Trente, 1959, nos. 250, 257, 258 and 259.

In excellent stable, ready to place condition considering the age. With traces of polychromy throughout, likely multiple layers. With extensive chipped and rubbed losses to the polychrome decoration overall as to be expected. Extensive rubbed chipped losses to the carved decoration as well. The arms with cracking, old repairs and fill to the joins as to be expected. Those joins involve iron nails as well as multiple areas of fill to the under arm area. With additional shrinkage cracks to the center of his stomach and with large infilled shrinkage crack. With additional shrinkage racks to the his robe and legs, thighs specifically. Evidence of old wood worming overall. Possibly constructed of pine. Lage repaired crack to his right and left sides. The crack to his left side with linen patch for stabilization. Additional drilled holes to the back of the horizontal section of the cross. The uppermost vertical section of the cross missing.
