Lot Essay

The still life elments in this painting are inspired by the works of Bartolomeo Bettera and Francesco Fieravino, called il Maltese, whereas the figure type is close in type to those in the paintings of Angelo Caroselli, from whom the artist takes their name. The whole is typical of the artist, as can be seen from comparisons with two very similar paintings, both in private collections, which can be examined in L. Laureati, (F. Zeri ed.), La Natura Morta in Italia, Milan, 1989, II, pp. 768-9, figs. 900 and 901.
