The still life elments in this painting are inspired by the works of Bartolomeo Bettera and Francesco Fieravino, called il Maltese, whereas the figure type is close in type to those in the paintings of Angelo Caroselli, from whom the artist takes their name. The whole is typical of the artist, as can be seen from comparisons with two very similar paintings, both in private collections, which can be examined in L. Laureati, (F. Zeri ed.), La Natura Morta in Italia, Milan, 1989, II, pp. 768-9, figs. 900 and 901.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is supported with a relatively recent glue lining and is on a new wooden stretcher. The paint is stable on the support. The varnish is clear and a fine craquelure is faintly visible in places under natural light. Some of the impasto of the thickly-applied paint remains, particularly in the woman’s feathers and on the tapestry draped over the table. Under ultraviolet light, the varnish fluoresces a light blue. A few areas of retouching fluoresce on her shoulders and at the center of her chest, as well as on the left edge of the open book. A few other 1/4 inch areas fluoresce in the lower left corner and on her foot. Overall, the painting appears to be in good condition. The colors are bright and it is ready to hang.
