The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel is approximately ¼ inch thick and is supported with a cradle. Hardware has been screwed into the cradle so that the painting can be hung in its unframed state. There are small losses to the lower and upper left corners of the panel. An approximately 1 inch damage is visible at the center of the right edge, with a 1 inch vertical scratch nearby. Drying cracks are visible on the two figure’s faces, but the paint is stable on the support. Under natural light, the varnish is slightly cloudy, and there are white dots and smudges visible in places, particularly over Lear’s face. These appear to rest on the varnish. Scuffing is also visible along the lower edge and at upper left. A fine vertical line is visible of Lear’s head, likely corresponding to a panel join. Under ultraviolet light, strengthening is visible along a vertical line corresponding to the aforementioned panel join. Further strengthening is visible over Lear’s collar and on his beard, as well as over four 1 inch passages on his shoulder. Retouches are also seen over his daughter’s nose and hand. Scattered retouches fluoresce in places on his garment and in broader passages in the sky. Sensitive cleaning to remove the white dots would improve the painting’s appearance.
