The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting has been executed with broad, painterly strokes and retains its lightness of composition.
The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. As a result of this process, there has been some flattening to the impasto layers.
Examination in natural light suggests there has been some retouching to the flesh tones, notably in the sitter's décolletage and along the hair line. There appears to be some further scattered retouching to the background.
Examination under UV light confirms these observations; showing that there have been two historic campaigns of restoration. There is a thick varnish that precludes a more in depth examination of the work.
The paint remains stable.
