The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is reinforced on the reverse with a glue lining. The varnish is clear and only minimally yellowed and the paint stable on the support. A fine craquelure is visible in natural light. Ultraviolet light reveals scattered retouching in the sky, clouds, landscape and to the figures. The most significant passages are in the sky at upper left, in the brown rock formations behind the man in red at lower left and to the darkest colored standing cow at center. Further, finer strokes of retouching fluoresce, generally to reinforce the contours or forms of figures, rocks and trees. The blue smalt color appears to have drained out in portions of the sky, revealing the red ground. The painting presents well and can be displayed in its current state.
